Devotional | My Yoke Fits You

Does the yoke you're carrying fit you?

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good—not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne. (Matthew 11:28-30 AMP)

The context of this scripture is acknowledging and knowing God. In this scripture, Jesus is referring to the burdensome load of the religious system of His day, which was the “officially accepted” way to know God. He was comparing its burdensome yoke with His yoke, which He said is “light and easy”. In the original Greek, however, the word translated as “easy” does not mean “easy”, but “well fitting”. It’s easy because it fits us! The actual word is χρηστός, which means “fit for use, useful and manageable.” It means it is suitably fitting and therefore pleasant.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (NKJV)

Jesus’ yoke fits us because He created us for it. The yoke that Jesus offers us is the yoke that God made us for - our yoke is our destiny, and our destiny is to acknowledge God and come to know Him, intimately (epiginōskō) which means “to become thoroughly acquainted with Him and to know Him thoroughly”.

If your system of getting to know the Father intimately feels heavy laden and burdensome, then you’re under the wrong yoke. Learn from Christ: His yoke is light and well-fitting. His yoke is our yoke.
