Devotional | A Lesson on Trust from the Christmas Story

"While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them." (Luke 2:6-7 NIV)

Have you ever put yourself in the place of Mary and Joseph?

What a bewildering experience this whole episode must have been! They were crucial participants in the unfolding of this supernatural and world-changing event, all orchestrated by the Lord. And yet very little of it was straightforward or simple: angels bring wild and unprecedented announcements, the scandal of being pregnant and unwed, travelling long distances, crowds and calamity, political confusion and tension everywhere... and God "failing" to provide a room for Mary to have her baby!

Why do we assume that co-labouring with God to unfold His plans in your life and my life needs to be smooth and problem free? Well, it often isn’t. Sometimes following God’s lead and His plans isn’t that comfortable. But like with Mary, Joseph and Jesus, His plans always work out to perfection when we trust Him. Unto us a Child is born; the Saviour of the World! We would do well to simply trust Him; even when we can't see His hand we can always trust His heart.

He is fulfilling His perfect will for your life as well. The key is to trust Him. Will you let the story of Christmas remind and inspire you to believe that it is God who is at work in us, both to will and to work for His good pleasure? There will be a glorious outcome if you do!
