Devotional | At the Center

"All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules the church. The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ’s body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence." (Ephesians 1:20-23 The Message, my emphasis)

Are you on the periphery, or are you a ruler?

I recently came across this Ephesians passage in the Message Bible and it almost knocked me off my sofa! I had to confirm that this was an adequate representation of what the original was communicating - and it is. This passage is loaded with several vast and profound truths. For this devotional though, let's just meditate on the portion in bold.

What this is saying, in a nutshell, is that Jesus Christ is ruling the world - through the church! Someone has said that we, his body, are the “mobile headquarters of the Triune God here on Earth.” Now, if it is true that Christ is ruling the world through you and me, how is that reflected in your life and my life?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we lived with an increasing awareness and confidence that wherever we went we are bringing the Kingdom and the Rule of God with us. So when we walk into a room (or a prison like I did recently) we are ushering Jesus and his Kingdom into that place. We get to influence the spiritual atmosphere around us, not the other way around. People are going to get to taste the peace, love, joy and all the good stuff of the Kingdom of God whether they realise it or not... if we give them the opportunity with our right attitude and belief in who we are in Christ.

This week, and in the weeks ahead, let’s try to live out this truth at the office, in the classroom, the grocery store, the bank, even in rush hour on the freeway! Christ rules through you and people get to taste his presence as you speak and act on his behalf!
