How Much Anointing is Right for You?

Have you ever asked yourself why some Christians seem to operate on a much higher level of anointing than others? Or do you ever ask, what level of anointing does God have for me?

For many years I struggled with the question, “Is it right to ask God for a greater measure of anointing?” As a younger believer, I thought it was wrong to ask for more. I reasoned that God knew best and that He knew that I would not be able to handle a great outpouring of His presence. Perhaps I couldn’t be trusted. Maybe it would go to my head and I would become full of spiritual pride.

As a result, I did not dare to ask for more, believing that I should leave it up to God’s sovereign will to decide what measure was right for me.

What causes so many believers to accept far less of His anointing than God is eager to provide? Our adversary, the devil, will do all that he can to keep us from operating in a powerful anointing. He knows by doing so that we will be able to do little for the Kingdom of God.

He has fooled many into believing that God sovereignly chooses only certain individuals and only those he chooses will have access to a powerful anointing. Others believe that only the very faithful or those who are obedient, or those who walk in humility can expect to receive a large measure of anointing. Many have struggled with the question, “How could God mightily use such an imperfect vessel?”

Are you among those the enemy has tricked into being content with a small measure of what God has prepared for you?

His will is for all believers to be mighty warriors.

Like many people, for a long time I was cheated out of receiving much of the presence and power that Jesus so willingly wants to impart. In embracing the lies of the enemy, I realize now that for over eighteen years of pastoral ministry I had settled for less of God’s presence than He was willing to impart.

What is the truth then? God is not a respecter of persons. His will is for all believers to be mighty warriors who will do great exploits and see His Kingdom advance. Has He not said, “All authority has been given unto me therefore go?” Did He not promise that we would do “greater things” because He went to be with the Father? It should be obvious then that all believers will need a great measure of anointing if we are to do great deeds for God. The truth is, the more of God’s presence we have, the less we will be drawn to such things as spiritual pride or impure motives.

How then can we receive the measure of the anointing he has for us? My first experience of doing ministry at a higher anointing was immediately after coming home from receiving the Toronto Blessing in 1994. I didn’t know what I had or if I had received anything, but at the very first meeting in our church, the presence of God fell in a tangible way and with it, a prophetic release.

The Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.

Shortly afterwards, I had the opportunity to minister in five different churches in the Maritimes. It was as if the cork was removed from a champagne bottle. While I was driving to these churches and as I got within forty-five minutes of where the meetings were to be held, the power of God would come over me, I was finding it hard to hold onto the steering wheel. When I arrived at the meetings, the presence of God would manifest and people would receive ministry who had not received before. I knew then that my ministry would never be the same again.

Should we not come to a realization that God wants to impart a powerful portion of His Spirit in us? In John 7:37-38, Jesus teaches that whoever believes, and thirsts should come to Him and drink, resulting in “streams of living water that will flow from within.” God has made all the preparations. He is now waiting for us to come to Him and drink. Again in Luke 11:13 we are told that the Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

How big is the Holy Spirit? Since I have started to expect a greater anointing, God has provided it! I no longer will accept the lies that it is only for a select few or that God can’t trust me with more of His presence.

The advancement of the Kingdom of God has been stifled long enough. We can all play a major role in seeing the works of the devil destroyed. Do you want more of Him? Ask believing and go in His strength doing the “greater things” He has called you to do!
